Pegasus Bay: Two Decades of Craft
Back in New Zealand, Pegasus Bay became home. I worked there for two decades, eventually becoming joint winemaker with Matthew Donaldson.
Together we pushed boundaries, experimenting constantly to create wines with depth, complexity, and structure — wines that could stand confidently alongside the great wines of the world rather than simply chasing fruit-forward styles.
Over 20 vintages at Pegasus Bay, I refined my approach, particularly with Pinot Noir, learning how to respond to each season and site.
Every vintage writes its own script.
Tongue in Groove: A Personal Dream
In 2010, after the Christchurch earthquake, a new project was born: Tongue in Groove.
The brand was created with Angela Clifford, a brilliant wine marketer with immense passion for New Zealand wine. The name reflects friendship — people who fit together like tongue and groove.
We focused on Pinot Noir and Riesling, sourcing fruit from Waipara and Marlborough to craft wines with personality and precision.
In 2013 I left Pegasus Bay to focus fully on Tongue in Groove.
Then came Covid, which disrupted many businesses and partnerships. But in an unexpected twist, I was given the opportunity to take full ownership of Tongue in Groove.
A dream realised.
Today, I craft small volumes of expressive wines that reflect both place and the knowledge accumulated from decades of global experience.
Sharing Knowledge
Wine is not something to keep to oneself.
For more than 25 years I have been deeply involved in the Southern Pinot Noir Workshop, an annual gathering where winemakers taste Pinot Noir barrel samples blind and openly critique and discuss them.
These discussions — often involving international scientists and leading winemakers — are about pushing quality forward.
I have always believed strongly in helping younger winemakers, sharing insights that can elevate the reputation of New Zealand Pinot Noir on the world stage.
Still Learning
After 43 vintages, I remain as curious as ever.
Wine humbles you constantly. Every season is different, every vineyard unique, every ferment alive.
What drives me is the same passion that started this journey decades ago — the pursuit of wines with balance, concentration, character, and authenticity.
Wines that tell the story of where they come from.
And the journey is far from over.
