Pinot Noir. She’s like the mysterious woman that keeps disappearing around the corner in front of you. Impossible to pin down, fickle and unfaithful she is none-the-less completely intriguing and worthy of obsession. She’ll lead you by the tongue on a journey that will make you broke and forget your name. What can we say? We’re in love.

TASTING NOTES

VINTAGE 2024

The 2024 season was the kind winemakers dream about — perfect from start to finish, yielding wines of exceptional balance and character. If only every vintage could be like 2024! The fruit reached ideal ripeness with pristine health, and sugar-to-acid levels in flawless harmony. Hand-harvested on March 27th, the grapes required almost no sorting — each bunch a picture of perfection, a winemaker’s reward for a truly remarkable season.

VINEYARD

Life is a journey — always shifting, surprising, and offering new turns. When an unexpected opportunity arose, it was simply too good to ignore. A beautifully resurrected, close-planted vineyard (5,000 vines per hectare) a passion project, and I was lucky enough to secure its fruit for a year. Nestled on the northeastern slopes of northern Waipara, just before the Omihi straight, this site delivers small, intensely flavoured berries and tight bunches — the kind that promise exceptional concentration and depth in the glass.

WINEMAKING

Traditional winemaking techniques were employed, with minimal intervention — allowing the wine to largely craft itself under gentle guidance and care. Around 40% whole bunches were placed at the bottom of the fermenter, with the remainder destemmed to create a mix of whole berries and lightly crushed fruit. The whole bunches contribute structure, tannin, and savoury complexity, while the whole berries bring generous fruit and lifted perfume. This careful balance has produced a wine of intense aromatics, deep dark fruit, and firm yet silky tannins — full-bodied, mouth filling, and beautifully composed. It was matured in one-year-old French oak for 14 months before being racked to tank and bottled, unfined and unfiltered to preserve purity and texture.

TASTING NOTES

Pinot Noir — elusive, mysterious, and quietly seductive. Shy at first, but when she reveals herself, she dazzles. The bouquet is beautifully lifted with red florals, wild berries, and subtle notes of earth, sandalwood, and spice. The palate is elegant yet poised, finely balanced, and focused, gliding into a long, lingering finish. There’s a vibrant energy throughout — cherries, cranberries, and raspberries intertwine with whispers of liquorice and aniseed, all wrapped in fine-grained tannins and a mouth-watering acid thread. Very European in its structure and soul, this is a Pinot Noir of grace and depth, drinking beautifully now and evolving gracefully through 2030 and beyond.
